Austerity Kills: 10-Year Study Shows Healthcare Consequences of Budget Cut-Backs

Bad for medical device sales, but worse for patient well-being: the negative effects of financial cutbacks in Europe and the U.S. are detailed in a new study by an Oxford economist and Stanford epidemiologist. In Greece, cutbacks in HIV prevention have brought a 200% increase in HIV infections since 2011.  Increased rates of suicide and depression have also been linked to economic austerity. Authors David Stuckler and Sanjay Basu say that these dire consequences are not inevitable and point to data from the U.S. in the 1930’s, Sweden, and post-Soviet Russia to show that government healthcare policies can make a positive difference.
